To find out if deep-cycle batteries can be used in cars, we first need to understand what a deep-cycle battery is.
The term “deep cycle” in deep cycle batteries refers to a key feature: deep discharge. Unlike other batteries that discourage discharging beyond a specific capacity range, deep-cycle batteries can discharge to a large portion of their capacity.
Deep discharge means the battery is almost completely depleted of its charge. The process of discharging and recharging is termed as one cycle. For example, if we discharge the battery to half its capacity and then recharge it, that constitutes one cycle.
However, the deeper we discharge and recharge the battery, the deeper the cycle.
This process occurs in deep-cycle batteries, hence the name. These batteries discharge slowly until fully depleted, then recharge for use again.
What is a deep-cycle battery?
Deep cycle batteries are designed specifically for repetitive and deep discharge. They are commonly used in applications that require a consistent and stable power supply over an extended period, such as golf carts, forklifts, and solar power systems.
Deep-cycle batteries can provide stable power for a longer duration. This is crucial because other types of batteries discharge at high currents, providing only a small fraction of their capacity. In contrast, deep-cycle batteries discharge slowly and continuously, reaching up to around 80% of their capacity, resulting in longer operating times.
Lead-acid batteries are typically manufactured as deep-cycle batteries. However, not all lead-acid batteries are deep cycles. The battery itself mentions this. They are sometimes referred to as marine batteries because of their widespread use in marine vehicles.
Deep cycle batteries differ from other types of batteries in several key aspects. Firstly, they have thicker plates capable of withstanding repeated discharge and recharge. Secondly, they have higher storage capacity, allowing them to provide a more stable power supply over a longer duration.
Although the lifespan of deep-cycle batteries is generally shorter than other types, this is offset by their ability to be used more frequently. Therefore, deep-cycle batteries are a vital component in many commercial and industrial applications.
Can deep-cycle batteries be used in car batteries?
While deep-cycle batteries can provide sufficient power to start a car, over time, they can deplete the car battery and cause damage. Deep cycle batteries continuously discharge and recharge, depleting the battery.
Cars also need to reserve a certain amount of charge to ensure proper starting. Moreover, deep-cycle batteries are highly sensitive to temperature, posing a significant safety risk in situations where the engine compartment may become very hot during operation. Therefore, deep-cycle batteries should not be used in car batteries.
Applications of deep cycle batteries:
Deep cycle batteries find widespread use in various fields, including:
Electric Boat Conversions: Deep cycle batteries play a crucial role in converting electric boats, providing reliable power.
Industrial Electric Forklifts and Sweepers: Used to drive industrial equipment, improving efficiency and reducing energy costs.
