When flying, we often encounter restrictions regarding luggage and items we can carry. Battery packs are one of the most important items with specific rules because they not only power devices but can also pose safety risks. This article will provide a detailed introduction to carrying regular batteries and lithium battery packs on airplanes.
According to aviation rules, battery packs cannot be directly carried in check luggage, nor can they simply be placed in checked bags. There are, however, specific rules regarding the lithium content in batteries:
All devices must be powered off during security checks. For example, laptops in checked luggage need to be turned off and checked properly.
Batteries are flammable and potentially explosive, which creates certain risks at high altitude due to low oxygen and high pressure. For passenger safety, airlines prohibit carrying batteries directly in checked luggage because it’s impossible to guarantee that the battery won’t malfunction under these conditions.
Common electronics like mobile phones and cameras can be carried on board as long as the batteries are installed in the device and the device is powered off or set to flight mode. Some airlines may also restrict devices with batteries from checked luggage, so it’s safest to carry them with you.
Alkaline batteries and nickel-metal hydride batteries can generally be carried on board but cannot be checked. Ordinary batteries include dry cells, button cells, and other common household batteries.
Precautions for ordinary batteries:
Lithium batteries must follow stricter rules:
Power banks are treated the same way. Power banks over 160Wh are prohibited, while those under 100Wh can be carried in hand luggage.
Safety tips:
Passengers may also carry devices like cameras, laptops, or portable video cameras:
Ordinary batteries, lithium batteries, and portable devices can be carried on planes, but passengers must follow airline regulations. Knowing the rated energy limits and other rules helps ensure safe transport and avoids delays or embarrassing stops at the airport.
When traveling, it’s important to familiarize yourself with these rules in advance. Remember, it’s not just batteries—liquids, knives, and other items also have clear regulations.
