18650 batteries are widely used in electronics and energy storage because their excellent performance. However, for first-time users, knowing which side of the 18650 battery is positive is crucial. Connecting the battery incorrectly can damage your device, reduce battery performance, or even cause safety issues. This guide explains how to quickly identify the positive and negative terminals, along with usage scenarios and essential safety tips.
As rechargeable lithium-ion battery,18650 battery must have its positive and negative terminals connected correctly to ensure proper device operation and safe battery usage. Reversing the polarity can cause anything from failure to start the device or burning out circuit components, to serious hazards like short circuits, overheating, swelling, or even fire and explosions. For example, when assembling battery packs, connecting the terminals incorrectly can disable the protection board and pose major safety risks. Learning how to identify the positive and negative ends is the first step toward using 18650 batteries safely and efficiently.
You can easily distinguish the positive and negative terminals of 18650 battery by their physical features. The positive terminal is usually flat and often marked with a “+” symbol. Some batteries also include a raised circular ring around the edge of the positive end to make identification easier. In contrast, the negative terminal has a slightly recessed surface and is typically marked with a “–” symbol. This recessed design helps ensure a tight connection with other batteries in a pack, improving conductivity. Before use, carefully check the shape and markings on both ends of the battery to quickly identify the terminals.
Besides checking the appearance, you can use tools like multimeter for accurate identification. Set the multimeter to DC voltage mode and choose a range higher than 3.7V, which is the nominal voltage of 18650 battery. Touch one end of the battery with the red probe and the other end with the black probe. If the screen shows a positive value, the red probe is touching the positive terminal. If it shows a negative value, the black probe is touching the positive terminal. This method works especially well for batteries with faded or missing markings, helping ensure a correct and safe connection.
Battery Pack Assembly
When assembling 18650 battery pack, follow the designed series or parallel connection scheme precisely. During nickel strip welding, make sure the strip fits tightly against the positive terminal (flat end) and the negative terminal (recessed end) to avoid weak solder joints. When connecting the battery protection board, match the terminals with the correct ports to prevent damage caused by reversed polarity.
When replacing 18650 battery in device, check the user manual or the polarity markings inside the battery compartment first. Align the battery with the indicated polarity before inserting it. Devices such as flashlights and power banks usually show “+” and “–” symbols inside the battery compartment—install the battery according to those indicators.
Avoid Short Circuits: Prevent metal tools from touching both terminals at the same time while identifying or connecting the battery, as this may cause short circuit.
Handle with Care: Avoid impact or pressure on the battery during operation, and never allow the terminals to contact sharp objects.
Keep Away from Heat: 18650 batteries can explode at high temperatures. Always keep them away from open flames and hot environments during handling.
Clear Markings: Choose batteries with clearly marked positive and negative terminals to reduce the risk of connection errors.
Brand and Certifications: Prioritize batteries with UL, CE, or RoHS certifications to ensure quality and safety.
Performance Specs: Select batteries with suitable capacity, discharge rate, and other parameters based on your device’s requirements.
Correctly identifying the positive and negative terminals of a 18650 battery is essential for safe and efficient use. Whether you’re assembling a battery pack or replacing battery in device, following these guidelines helps prevent problems caused by reversed polarity.
